What would the U.S. look like if Jesus were president? Part 1
Dec 24
As I was doing my daily devotions I came across the section that told about Jesus feeding the 5,000 men with a fish and a few loaves of bread. This made me start thinking and I eventually started wondering what would the United States look like if Jesus were president.
I started thinking we probably wouldn’t have many of the problems we have today. Jesus cared about the poor, the hungry, the disenfranchised. He didn’t care about simply giving them a meal or easing their pain. He cared about actually solving the problem. And with a nation that has as many problems as we do, we could use somebody who has solutions like he does.
What would Jesus do?
Wherever Jesus went, he healed people. He wasn’t a rich man and had no house to live in but he always gave of himself to help others. Can you imagine Pres. Obama or President Bush being wondering nomads? Do you think they would have taken the job of president if they knew they would’ve had no place to live?
How can two men who both claim to be followers of Christ be so far off from what Jesus would have done? I think the answer to that lies in the fact that, as human beings, we look out for our own interests and their own creature comforts above everything else. I’m not defending it. I’m not saying it’s right. I’m just saying that it’s human nature, that means all of us, myself included. And it is human nature that I believe causes 99% of the problems we have in this nation. Greed, jealousy, anger, covetousness, these are the reasons that we have problems. And it all stems from one basic issue, pride.
Jesus was not a prideful man. He didn’t put himself over others and he spent most of his time serving. When I look at Bush or Obama I wish I could say the same thing about them. But I can’t. One man that I can say that about is Mark Horvath. Mark is a man who lives in Southern California and spends his time helping the homeless. He runs himself ragged shuttling people around, getting people to the doctor, finding shelter for them, buying them clothes and food. This is a man who lives after the heart of Jesus. This is a man who would probably never take the job, but has the right priorities and mindset to become president.
Humility and politics don’t mix.
Do you ever wonder why humble, righteous people never run for president? I do. And I think I have an answer. Humble, righteous people don’t want the spotlight. They don’t want the fame, notoriety, power, or prestige. They are happy to be working in the trenches making real differences in real people’s lives. Having hundreds of people set up for a fund raising dinner to feed and entertain millionaires isn’t on their list of things they would like to do. Making a real difference is what they like to do. Making sure that children have shoes, families don’t have to live in a van, people have the medication they need, and in their basic needs are being met, that is one humble and righteous people do.
Horvath for president
If Jesus were president he would have priorities like Mark Horvath. And if Mark Horvath president he would have priorities like Jesus. You can follow him on twitter, @hardlynormal.
